The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, a “Bump” in the Road.

by Bill Bartlett, Board Member

While comprehensive work on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is still some time away, thanks to the Vermont Agency of Transportation (Vtrans), there is a “bump” in the “road” or in the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. In Hyde Park Village in late August and early September, Vtrans replaced a substandard bridge over the Rail Trail by filling a portion of the original railroad bed on Depot Street at the south end of Hyde Park Village.

The fill, which is just to the east of Hyde Park’s planned Rail Trail parking area and informational kiosk, creates an on-grade crossing by Depot Street of the Rail Trail. Signs on Depot Street, in both directions, mark this crossing indicating “Recreational Trail All-Season”. There is a level area on each side of Depot Street for Trail Users to wait for passing vehicle traffic. The fill for this project impacts roughly 500 feet of the trail, and creates a 150 foot 8% grade in each direction (the “bump”). The filled area is surfaced with crushed stone.

Nearby businesses like this beer brewery will surely benefit from a completed LVRT recreational trail.
